The Pine Point Parade was built on a simple idea: bring neighbors together. Founders Dianne McLellan, Judy Shirk, Pat DeGrinney, John Thurlow, and Elaine Richer couldn’t have known just how big that idea would grow. What began as a lighthearted neighborhood gathering—with a few families, some red wagons, and hand-painted signs—has blossomed into a signature event for Scarborough and far beyond.

In the early years, there were just a few families who wanted to make the Fourth feel a little more festive and a lot more connected. That spirit hasn’t faded—it’s only grown. Today’s Pine Point Parade still feels intimate, despite drawing crowds from more than 50 cities and even across the Canadian border. Locals and visitors return year after year. Families plan their vacations around it. Kids who once rode in wagons now help organize the event.

It’s not about the scale. It’s about the feeling. That unmistakable mix of pride, joy, and a growing community that turns a small idea into something lasting. That’s what makes it more than a parade. That’s what makes it Pine Point.

Today, the Pine Point 4th of July Parade Committee is proud to include eleven dedicated volunteer members—along with one very special honorary addition. This year, 4-year-old Annabelle Tapley joined the team as our tiniest and most enthusiastic helper.

Annabelle helped us plant flowers at the Pine Point welcome sign, bringing fresh color and sweet spirit to our community’s first impression. While our committee continues to plan and preserve one of Scarborough’s most beloved traditions, it’s little moments like these—that remind us what the parade is truly about: new and longtime community members, continuity, and joy across growing generations. From patriotic décor to flower planting day, our committee reflects Pine Point’s heart: spirited, neighborly, and full of hometown pride. We’re honored to welcome parade goers and volunteers from near and far and carry forward a legacy that’s blooming beautifully.
